While I will always be thankful to all of our men and women in uniform for their service to our country, I am especially thankful for all the Black soldiers in the past who fought for a country that did not believe in them. Imagine that. Men who had to use separate bathrooms, look down when talking to someone who was White and addressed as “boy” in society fought for the right to fight side by side to the death with White soldiers.

These men recognized that one of the greatest moments in history was passing by and refused to sit on the “coloreds only” bench. The history of America was being written and they wanted to make sure that the account was complete. Society had always portrayed Black men as lazy, ignorant and incapable of making sound decisions for himself. So once again they had to swallow their pride and demand to serve.

Think about that for a minute.

I salute you. All of you!
