“Willie Henderson is no Army recruiter, but he’s often on the hunt for a few good men — especially black men.
He wants them to become volunteers for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Birmingham, a nonprofit youth mentoring program.
Currently, the organization has 989 children on its rolls, including 673 black children. More than 300 of the agency’s enrolled black children are black males.
But when it comes to registered adult volunteers who can serve as a “big” to a child, known as a “little,” the numbers get interesting. The agency has 763 volunteers, including 235 men. But, only 60 of those male volunteers are black.”
