ZZ5E183F41 Shut Up Detroit! You Are Not Haiti
Ever notice how easy it is for folks to strike up the band, raise awareness and wave the flags of guilt and sorrow when a 3rd world country is struck with sudden tragedy? We have no problems sending in teams into those countries to both aid and listen to the concerns of the people of that country. Try that same approach here in the US and suddenly those who have a vested interest in maintaining the status quo go nuts. Now all of a sudden, we have to be very caaareful and cautious on how we portray Black folks. Go to Haiti? Line up all the dead bodies. We want to see all of it.

“Get that one over there. He is covered in flies.”

You know, I have no real beef with the NAACP. Then again, maybe I do. Once again they are showing how a great organization can flush down a wonderful and inspiring legacy in just a few years.

In this article, Rev. Wendell Anthony, a Detroit pastor and president of the Detroit branch of the NAACP comes out to slam Dateline NBC for its “negative portrayal” of his city. He even goes on to suggest that the story will do more harm than good.

“When they attack Detroit, they attack everybody in this region,’ said Rev. Wendell Anthony, a Detroit pastor and president of the Detroit branch of the NAACP. “And so, if Detroit goes down the tubes, everybody else is going. We ain’t going by ourselves. We’re taking some folks with us.”

“They want to dis Detroit so much,”

I have included clips of the Detroit report below. Chris Hansen talked to an array of people–most of them being every day Detroit citizens who were just giving the real deal on the city.

In the meantime, another “Rev.” in the piece flew to New York to meet with Chris Hansen to set the record straight on Detroit. He said that he as pressed for a town hall meeting (insert yawn here) to give NBC to opportunity to meet with Detroit leadership (note: no mention of everyday people not connected to the flickering Detroit power structure being at that meeting).

From Huffingtonpost.com

“I believe that the airing of ‘City of Heartbreak and Hope’ has caused irreparable harm to the good people of Detroit,’ Reverend Horace Sheffield III said. ‘Detroit deserves a fair media shake from NBC. We travel to New York City to discuss the possibility of airing a follow-up production that is balanced and does not wallow in sensationalistic negativity.”

Translation: All the Black people in this piece were gullible idiots who were talking crazy. WE can give you the real story.

I am very aware of how the media can at times get it wrong when it comes to how it may do a story that features Black folks. But based on the testimonies of those who live in that city, that town is in shambles and the flickering power structure is too embarrassed for anyone to shine the light on the problems many of them helped create.

I don’t like calling out preachers on this site and it brings me no great joy at all. But I get upset when I see two preachers like this brushing away the voices of the people so that they can get their shine on. At the same time, they are telling you while telling you they are doing it for the sake of the city. That is in no way Christ-like. This city is going to pot (Nix that! The city is in the pot) and the best they can do is come up with a town hall meeting as a response–not to the needs of the people, but to the cameras that recorded the voices of those people.
