Collin Powell takes a swipe at President Obama for not doing enough to fix employment.

“Powell said the president needed to focus ‘like a razor blade’ on employment, giving the same level of attention to jobs as he did to passing bills overhauling health care and education.

‘I understand the importance of all of that,’ Powell said. “But as far as the American people are concerned, the main attack is employment.”

During the same interview, Powell takes another swipe at the Tea party movement, accusing them of not providing any real solutions.

“This movement doesn’t become a real force until it’s— until it starts to talk to the issues,’ Powell said. ‘I want to cut spending. I want to have lower taxes. But how do you do that? You can’t just have slogans. You can’t just have catchy phrases. You have to have an agenda.”

But here is where Powell comes out looking completely ridiculous with his criticism–

NO President can create sustainable jobs that can uplift the economy of an entire nation.  FDR did it to a measure, but the World War is considered by many as being the main catalyst that helped turn our nation’s economy around. At best, all a President can do is to create more bureaucracies that have a near zero effect on the economy at large.  Since Obama has been in office, the unemployment rate has gone down in Washington, DC are while it continues to rise outside of the beltway. As a part of Washington establishment, Powell should know that no President can create the kind of jobs that are needed to turn this economy around. At best, all they can do is…rely on “slogans and catchy phrases”.  It was he and the rest of the Obama fan base who bought into the “Yes we can” rehtoric while those who asked for specifics were seen as grumpy old obstacles that simply just hated the idea of having a Black President.

Obama has already focused on the rising unemployment issue with his stimulus bill.  It was a trillion dollar gamble and it failed the meet his promise to “create or save three million to four million, nearly 90 percent of them in the private sector“. Not only was the prediction way off, but the administration included SEASONAL census work as part of the recovery.

As I said in a previous post, if Obama made the promise that his administration had the ability to stem the rising tide of unemployment, then yes he should be held to that promise.  But people like Powell have been inhaling a little too much of that Potomac breeze if he really believes that any President can magically heal the economy.  So the only thing Powell would be left with would be more catchy phrases and slogans.
