“The NFL all too often looks like a game between the Bloods and the Crips without any weapons. There, I said it.” (Rush Limbaugh’s comment regarding the NFL back in 2007)
This was one of the line critics of Rush reached for when he made his bid to be a part owner of the St. Louis Rams. The problem wasn’t what he said, but the fact that the statement came from HIS mouth.
From all over the press world and the blogosphere, unofficial standard bearers of the NFL felt the urge to chime in and defend the precious NFL who has never (if you took the time to listen to these critics) inhaled controversial characters.
“The league cannot be that hamstrung in finding deep-pocketed financiers that it’s left with no alternative but embracing someone whose occupational practice is making people feel more comfortable within their own prejudices.” (Drew Sharp, Detroit Free Press in his column “Keeping Score”)
“The National Football League has set high standards for racial justice and inclusion,” Jackson said. “He should not have the privilege of owning an NFL franchise–and it is a privilege.” (Jesse Jackson on Rush Limbaugh’s bid to be a part owner of the St. Louis Rams)
“If Rush Limbaugh buys the St. Louis Rams, Will it Become All White or All Right?” (Stuart Fischoff, Ph.D)
Meanwhile, there is another majority Black league who image isn’t worth saving by the armchair calvary. Like the NFL, the NBA has been struggling with the issue off court bad behavior by some of its players for a very long time. The latest incident involves Washington Wizards teammates Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenton as they drew guns on each other in the locker room over a gambling debt. I wonder if their gambling involved betting on other NBA teams…hmmmm.
But anyway and as predicted, no long commentaries from the peanut gallery on how this incident has shot the entire image of the NBA to hell. Just shake your head and move on silently. Nothing to see here but two Black men fulfilling a stereotype.
If you have the time, check out this chart put together by the Sports Law Blog. It contains a list (as of 2005, heh) of NBA players who have been arrested from everything from statutory Rape, marijuana possession, sodomy and murder.
I have long said that perhaps one of the best solutions for cities like Detroit, New Orleans and similar cities across this country is for them to elect certified members of the KKK to office. That way, people will actually take the time to care about addressing what has become the status quo in those areas. But even if we did that, once the Klan member is forced out of office, everything will return back to … the status quo.
What is so shameful about both the NBA and the NFL is that they have built this entire diversity sensitivity complex that can spot out alleged racism in a microsecond. But when it comes to the criminal element behind its walls….
….shhhhh! Can’t you see we are watching the game?
No Standards For The NBA
