If you have not noticed by now, easing into the dialogue coming from the left is that it would be foolish for Obama to have an agenda to help Black folks. All of a sudden I am reading commentaries that convey this feeling that Black people are doing bad, but we’ll be alright. Where is all this newfound patience coming from? Cuz’ it certainly has a way of getting lost when the other party occupies the White House.

Mr. President, the Black unemployment rate is more than double than it was under Bush, but we understand.

Mr. President, Black-owned business received a pence from your $787 billion dollar stimulus, but we understand.”

We understand that with great patience and understanding, this too will pass.

Love, your fan base.

As you know, Tavis Smiley is still in the crosshairs of those who are basically telling him to not bump the apple cart. I think folks can pick all kinds of holes in Tavis ideology, but the man is 100% on point when he talks about holding Obama to the same standard as we held past Presidents. The real issue here is that Obama is the first Black President and Black folks who do not keep their criticisms to themselves may jeopardize this moment in history. It’s kinda like being the only Negro in the ol’ Roosevelt Stadium yelling out “You call that a hit?” to Jackie Robinson. To some, such a move would have sent Robinson from the baseball field to the peanut cart.

Two pieces that essentially tell Tavis to “hush” immediately come to mind. This first one comes from a person I knew quite well. In fact, I knew him when he was a nerdy kid back in my early youth ministry days. While I may not share his views politically, I am so proud to see this young man make something of himself.

An open letter to Tavis Smiley
By Anthony Coley, Special to CNN

This second piece comes from Jack White of the website TheRoot.com. His angle is that while talk is good, what is really needed is a real grassroots effort.

Smileypalooza: Right Message, Wrong Messenger

As I responded in his piece, Smiley actually wrote an entire book (The Covenant In Action) that gives examples of how individuals who attended his town hall meetings have gone into the community and are doing the work. He also lays out a step by step blueprint on how others can do it as well.
