Some time ago, I wrote a series of posts were I made the point that Black advertising agencies and newspapers were refusing to see reality when it comes to advertising in our community.
The main point I have been making for years in this whole debate is that as a people, we give NO INCENTIVE for companies to actually pay for advertising in our publications. Why? Because when we name our kids after brand names like “Porshe”, “Courvoisier”, “Lexus”, and advertise brand names FOR FREE in many of our own music, why would anyone pay for advertising?
William Leonard Roberts II (a.k.a. “Rick Ross”) continues the tradition of giving away potentially millions of dollars of advertising for luxury car manufacturer Maybach.

The name of his group was no doubt inspired by an earlier song he performed called “Maybach Music”.
I have very serious doubts that Maybach is paying Ross for this because how many Maybach ads have you seen…period? Yet it’s become the cool thing to do to give Maybach and other brands free ad space in our culture.

Customers don’t care
Back in ’06, then head of the NNPA (George Curry) called the growing trend of large businesses reducing or eliminating advertising in Black newspapers “economic terrorism”.
