“Buckman also had harsh words for a group of teachers who are in favor of striking instead of approving a new contract that forces them to give up $500 per month or $250 per paycheck as an investment. The money will be given to the district to help plug a $219 million deficit, and it will be returned when they retire.
‘If they strike, I hope we start a homeschool movement,’ she said in a fiery rebuke. ‘If you want to walk out on us now, when we have all of our kids failing…you can’t do it.” (full article)

Detroit parents are learning the hard way that public school system is about THE SYSTEM first, not the kids. Now of course, who would voluntarily give up $500/mo out of their paycheck to “help” the government? We hear all the time that it is all about the kids, but in these desperate times when money is on the table, the lines between teacher and parent can be clearly seen.
Health care debate side street
Although this has NOTHING to do with health care, I think it does give us a great example of what happens to quality of service when you begin chipping away the financial incentive to do a good job. Just like these teachers are not going to do a good job with lower pay, what do you think is going to happen if doctors are forced to take a cut in pay to treat more patients?
Although Buckman’s threat may be a little late considering that Detroit Public Schools have been tanking for decades, it does show that at some point parents are not going to allow their kids to go down with the ship of government failure.
