Turn on any nature show on television and you will hear fascinated voice of a narrator explaining how a certain species of animal or insect learns to adapt to various situations in the wild. Why, it almost seems like they really know what they are doing. AAAAAMMMMAAAAZING!
When this outlook on the animal kingdom gets projected on the Black race, I get upset to say the least.
Days after Obama’s victory in the Presidential elections, commentators from all directions began spitting out piece after piece talking about how GROWN Black men and women FINALLY have a role model. When it came to Black children, it was being reported that grades were going up and Black boys were sitting up straight in class.
Today we hear that the so-called “Obama effect” is being challenged by another study that found no such effect.
“Dr. Joshua Aronson of New York University, who conducted a study in June 2008 after Hillary Clinton conceded and Obama secured the nomination, found “absolutely no results” to support Friedman’s findings.
Aronson tested a diverse sample of 160 college-aged students from various demographics — over half of whom were black.
Aronson said he had expected to detect a noticeable effect in test performance, but he found none — suggesting that black students might not identify with Obama’s success.
“Past research really suggests that the best role models aren’t the ones who are innately gifted, stellar individuals,” Aronson said.
“He’s certainly breaking down barriers, but he’s doing it with exceptional talent, which most people think that they don’t have. He might not be the best role model in terms of having people say, ‘Wow, if he can do it, so can I’” he said.” (more…)
I tell ya’, some in the scientific community are determined to cast Obama as “Caesar” from “Planet of the Apes” (those who are familiar with “Conquest of the Planet of the Apes” know exactly what I am talking about).
I’ve always found it interesting how, in a way, we still live in a segregated society, one that demeans African Americans in a backhanded way.
“Now that we have a black President, black people can finally have a real role model!” Excuse me? What about what the black community had accomplished prior to Obama? What about the stalwart examples within the black community itself?
What’s the difference between a “white” role model, a “black” role model, or a “Latino” role model? Since all are human beings – though with various cultural backgrounds – shouldn’t we look to all humans who have done positive things, whether that be bring about civil rights to an oppressed people group or to the father who puts his family first?
I agree with your post. I think it’s demeaning to think that grown black men and women who have already proven themselves as individuals of character should suddenly need a role model whereas other races apparently have grown out of the need for one.

This is what caught my attention, “Aronson said he had expected to detect a noticeable effect in test performance…” Why on earth would anyone expect such a thing in the first place?

My last name is the president’s first name. Should I be prouder, sit up a little straigter because MY name is out there getting national attention?!?!?! Pizza is one of the most popular foods, but its origins came from Italy. Should my Italian heritage genes be so much prouder and my demeanor reflect that?
Personally, I miss all those TV cowboy heroes that stood up for right and fought injustice.
