(Black Money Worldwide) WASHINGTON — More than one million African-American households had more than $100,000 income in 2006, according to the American Community Survey of the U.S. Census Bureau. The figures are contained in a new report Open Up the Doors: the State of Black Business, fourth edition. Traditionally, most analysis of black income focus on the level of poverty, overlooking the achievements of black families who have successfully navigated an economically discriminatory society. Such stereotypes contribute to phenomena such as the high prevalence of subprime loans among affluent black households. About 47 percent of black households made more than the median African-American income. That included 1,082,430 whose income exceeded 100,000 last year. In 2004, the figure was 885,160.

Also, 356,045 African-American individuals earned more than $100,000 in 2006, including 53,000 who did it part-time, according to the Census data. (more…)
