(seattlemedium.com) No one can deny the profound meaning of an African-American father who has overcome the obstacles of his color and survived the violence and dysfunction of our society to successfully raise his children. Given our reality, that is no small achievement. Indeed, there is a silent respect paid to such a man, a quiet recognition of what such a man means to his people in the face of economic, social, and political oppression. My father, Jim Coley, is such a man. Yet, this is not the greater truth of his success as my father, nor is it the highest meaning I take from his example for my own life. (more…)
