ATLANTA (Reuters) – The number of people in the United States from ethnic or racial minorities has risen to more than 100 million, or around one third of the population, according to a U.S. Census Bureau report on Thursday.
The minorities figure stood at 100.7 million, up from 98.3 million a year earlier. Within that, the Hispanic population was the fastest growing at a rate of 3.4 percent between July 2005 and July 2006.
Hispanics were also the largest minority group, accounting for 44.3 million people on July 1, 2006, or 14.8 percent of the overall U.S. population which, according to census data released in October 2006, stood at more than 300 million.

“About one in three U.S. residents is a minority,” said Census Bureau Director Louis Kincannon.
“There are more minorities in this country today than there were people in the United States in 1910. In fact, the minority population in the U.S. is larger than the total population of all but 11 countries (on the planet).”
The black population grew 1.3 percent in the year from July 2005 and reached 40.2 million in 2006, the census said, while the number of native Hawaiians and members of other Pacific islander groups reached 1 million.
Asians were the second fastest-growing minority group at a rate of 3.2 percent, with their numbers standing at 14.9 million.
The population of non-Hispanic whites who indicated no other race grew 0.3 percent during the one-year period. (more…)

I read down to one of Marie’s comments in December 31st, 2008 at 6:32 pm. I realize this is pretty old but I see this discussion is still active and people still read it. (I also found this website by mistake) I may have not been paying too much attention but I think I read somebody say Venezuela is a powerful country etc. Well… Trust me we don’t even see any of the money that enters the country, I am Venezuelan as well. I lived in Miami for about 10 years (I’m 16 btw) and I so very much wish to go back some day. Although I as well experienced some racism in middle school and it wasn’t from any white person… Most racist people I saw were actually black and I couldn’t understand why they felt the need to pick on somebody for being white.. I usually just didn’t socialize much and didn’t get into any trouble. Also being born in America is more than winning the lottery; my parents were forced to come back since our temporary documents expired. We left when I was very small because when the president Hugo Chavez got elected there was so much insecurity. 2 of my dad’s shops got completely robbed, a company that belongs to the government never paid him any of the money they owed him and if my dad did not pay the money he was loaned to survive he would get a bullet in his head just like you get one if you are a threat to “Socialism”.. I really had no idea how this country worked and apparently it doesn’t work very well it took me a lot of time to get use to the corruption/insecurity etc and now we are definitely experiencing some of the “Great things” our president has done (sarcasm) He begins small.. Now he wants to make all uniforms red including schools, Close everything at 9pm and nobody can be in the streets at 12 am. He devaluates our currency and wants to force businesses to not increase the price on imported goods. Forcing them to leave the country and leave us with very little commercialism. I know people whose houses were planted with bombs and luckily survived. Why? It was because they were a threat to Chavez. The water supply in my building was reduced because the government found out many of the people who lived here were from the “opposition” I even got assaulted 3 times in 1 year and trust me when you are assaulted here it is not the same as being mugged in USA they will point big guns to your face maybe even in public maybe will even force you to get in a van and kidnap you (like almost happened to me) and nobody will do anything because of fear the mafia has power over the police… I’m sorry I went a bit off topic but I really hate when people speak that way about this suppose socialism when don’t even know what’s actually going on. You are all lucky to live in America today. Even with the economic crisis it is way better. I Love the United States and I plan on living in the USA again one day you are all very very lucky.
Idopas. This “stupid” American lived in your country for many years. “Thank you” and your people for being so hospitable to me. My son was often called a “stupid American” by his peers and a teacher (for merely opening his mouth) in school and I went out of my way not to watch or read certain TV programs that would reduce my nationality to ignorant stereotypes. “Way to educate the people!” I may not come from a perfect country but I’ll take our flaws over the UK’ any day. I found your country steeped in arrogance and tradition to be stifling. Yes, we have an ugly past but let’s not forget that it was the UK along with other European countries who brought slavery and the origins of racist hatred into this country. Your country raped and exploited others on their land. I guess “out of sight, out of mind” applies to your general mentality. AND get over yourself, the NHS makes many mistakes and is far from being perfect. Concentrate on that and maybe one day you can have the same health care France has (which surpasses yours). You spend too much time obsessing over my country, fix yours! ooh, was I being “loud”? Apologies to the most repressed country I’ve stepped foot on – no wonder you binge drink.
I am Hispanic and agree with most of this comments left here.
I think in every culture and society have allot of racism regarding of the color of Your skin, background, religion or sexual Orientation one of the race that have suffer allot with racism is Black People. I think people who is racist is nothing more than just being ignorant. White people specially they think because they have a degree or a master that make you a better person than any other color of skin. I am sorry but that is just a bunch of Crap… the color of my skin is light but i respect and i see everybody as the same Humans because that’s what we are Humans. if somebody else think different they may be from another galaxy.
Please help me to educate people against racism because they need an intervention here is a link where You can leave Your Comments and thoughts…….http://twitter.com/Dankboy20

It seemed to me that you have some race issues. You tried to talk about people being racist at the same time putting down the so, call “white” people. Why even bother measuring yourselves against “white” people? What exactly are you fighting against…? Racist coming from just “whites”.
If you read some of the comments here Hispanics are very racist. Have any one in your family ever used the word “Negrito” which means “Little Niger” Translation: a black Hispanic? Yes, I know everyone will tell you that it is with love… that the Hispanic people call the Hispanic blacks “Little Niger”. What about how Hispanics describe a Japanese, a Chinese or a Korean person as “Chinito”. Translation “Chinese”. The Hispanic people laugh when they refer to an Asian person as “Chinito”. What about the jokes out laud against Jewish people “Jews” ha, ha, ha.
The Hispanics from New Mexico are of Spanish-Mexicans descend with lighter skin color. Those New Mexicans Hispanics will discriminate like anyone else against other Mexican-Indians descends.
Sorry, but your confusing the issue. Yes, if you have a college education your life is and it always be better even in bad time. Just ask the people of Haiti where 50% of the people cannot read or write. Just ask the people illegally here from Central America in the USA where the majority have not completed elementary school.
The education has nothing to do with someone believing that another person is racist (chip on their shoulder type of person). Education is a big Neutralizer. Education=Better or more qualify individual, higher paying job, better standard of living, and better life.
I do not care what the color of your skin is or if you are fat, skinny or handsome. But, sorry if someone has not work hard to better themselves via higher education or “life experience” … I will completely discourage my children from having that person being part of our family. Unless we happened to be at a church event where under the eyes of God we are all equal.
We are not all equal under normal circumstances. We were born equal but after a certain age or time it is up to you to be better than the next person. Education is the key. Someone might discriminate against you base on your socio economic status and that does not make that person a racist.
My argument against the Hispanics in the USA from Central America is that the majority of them do not value education. They do not value higher education. They walk around with a chip in their shoulder angry at “whites” and everyone else because they perceive some kind of discrimination towards them but they are not wise enough to realized that the color of the skin has nothing to do with the perceive discrimination. It has more to do with their socio economic status.
There is nothing wrong with smiling at someone, being kind to someone. Being generous and all …but, do not expect the same someone to go all out for you if you are the type that sits around and expect the world to take care of you because we are “equal”
The best ways to educate people about race just advise them to get an education plain and simple. You do not need to get a PHD or an Engineer get some kind of education or else work hard so, on the eyes of society you stand tall and then you will see that race has nothing to do with the way people treat you.
About the comment on gays… “sexual Orientation”.. Sorry, I have nothing against gays however it upset me how the gay community has been trying to bring up their issues into my living room where I have to explain to my small children “sex” and that sex should be between a man and a women. I believe that was the response our new President gave during the campaign trail in 2008.
I find that gays and now the Muslim community want everyone to view them as people that need to be given more rights and privileges than others in this country. Am I a racist or a bigot for making that comment? No, I believe that those pople are incredible arrogant for trying to impose their views in our family.
Isaac: I feel for you and your family. I hope that you do not give up in coming back to the greatest country in the planet. Also, discourage anyone that you can from supporting those ignorants in Hollywood… that support the Dictator Hugo Chavez. Our movie list is getting smaller and smaller every year. We gave up giving our money to those that trash the USA. For example: The actor Sean Penn I, believe he has a movie coming out soon. Mr. Penn just said while in Haiti that he now has great respect for the USA military??? Yes, after nearly 50 years of his life… he now realized that the USA Military is a great thing. What a joke! Mr. Penn is one of Hugo Chavez and Castro great supporters.
C’mon. Israel is the most racist country on earth with its Zionist-Apartheid regime.
i love american
