I think that it is fair to say that MANY people draw their conclusions about an issue based on the title and/or the first few lines of an article. Here is an example:

AP: Whites Got Better Katrina Insurance Payouts

This title set the tone for me by leading me to believe that once again RACISM was in play with Black Katrina survivors. Now here is the rest of the article (I will use bold text to highlight key points)

The Associated Press has found a gaping disparity between white and black Hurricane Katrina victims over insurance payouts.

A review of 3,000 complaints filed to state regulators over homeowner insurance payouts shows whites are much more successful in the process and much more aggressive.

Whites were found three times more likely to appeal their settlements than lower-income blacks, who didn’t know or doubted the government would help.

>>>>>But once appeals were filed and pursued, whites and minorities both received an average of about $40,000 more than they’d first been offered.< <<<<<

A woman living in the devastated Lower Ninth Ward said she got fed up with numerous calls to her insurer and accepted the $34,000 for damages that totaled more than $120,000. She said she didn’t know she could appeal and doubted it would be worthwhile. (source)

Notice that the AP makes this into a race issue and not an issue of those who were persistent versus those who were not. I would imagine that similarly, whites who “didn’t know” also received less, yet the AP decides to separate this information by race.

Another example of how ANYTHING can be made into a race issue.

I completely agree with you Duane. When I first read that article, I thought it was just going to be how adjusters favored paying whites more than blacks. But when I actually read the text and seen that it illustrated our distrust in government and lack of perseverance (hope I spelled it right).

Just like you can’t judge a book by it’s cover, don’t judge an article by it title. LOL

Hey, but who asked me anyway?
