Update 1: “A Sept. 27, 2001, Zogby poll showed that 70 percent of Hispanics said a dramatic increase in border enforcement is needed. The 2001 Zogby poll showed a majority of Hispanics thought an amnesty for illegal Mexican immigrants was a bad idea. A March 2000 Wall Street Journal poll I showed three times as many Hispanics viewed immigration as “too open” as “too closed.” . . . (more from “Many Hispanics support Tancredo”)

More updates are being added at the bottom of this post.

It never ceases to amaze me when people (regardless of culture and issue) can be so willingly ignorant when it comes to history. Take for example the usage of the phrase “¡Sí, Se Puede!”. This was coined by the founder of the National Farm Workers Association, Cesar Chavez in response to the mistreatment of LEGAL Mexican farm workers in this country. Here is something you will not hear at any of the now highly-publicized protests for ILLEGAL immigrant rights:

In 1969, Chávez and members of the UFW marched through the Imperial and Coachella Valley to the border of Mexico to protest growers’ use of illegal aliens as temporary replacement workers during a strike. Joining him on the march were both a Reverend Ralph Abernathy and a U.S. Senator Walter Mondale. Chávez and the UFW would often report suspected illegal aliens who served as temporary replacement workers as well as who refused to unionize to the INS. (more…)

Myth: All Hispanics side with those who enter this country illegally.

False! As a resident in Southern California, I can tell you that there are many Hispanics here that do not agree with this sense of entitlement by illegal immigrants. Sadly, for those of Hispanic origin that disagree with these protests, many of them have to keep their opinions on the DL in fear of being perceived as a sellout (sounds familiar?). Check this out:

Prop. 200 had Hispanic support

By Lourdes Medrano and Enric Volante

Arizona Daily Star

Tucson, Arizona | Published: 11.04.2004

“Hispanic voters appear to have given a narrow majority of support to Proposition 200 in a state where voters overall easily passed the controversial measure in 11 of 15 counties.

The measure failed by the widest margin – 61 percent to 39 percent – in the border county of Santa Cruz, where the 2000 census found Hispanics made up 76 percent of voting-age residents. Yet it passed in heavily Hispanic Yuma County with 65 percent of the vote. However, it is unclear how many of those Hispanic residents are registered voters who went to the polls.

An Associated Press exit poll of 1,781 voters found that the margin of support for Proposition 200 was higher among families that earned less than $50,000 last year and among voters who were not college graduates (Black Informant: So we can rule out making this a “class” issue)…”

(And what is Prop. 200?)

“Proposition 200 requires proof of citizenship when registering to vote and evidence of legal residency when applying for some government benefits. It also could mean jail time for state workers who don’t report illegal immigrants who seek benefits. It passed with 56 percent of the vote, losing only in Pima, Greenlee, Coconino and Santa Cruz counties.” (more…)

Mind you, this is similar to what was being proposed in Georgia recently except opponents (including many black activists) were framing this as a form of racism (see article).

There is plenty more to this issue that I will try to cover tomorrow. In the meantime, please continue to voice your opinion on this issue by commenting.

Update 2: “In 2003, according to the Arizona Department of Motor Vehicles, 57,600 cars were stolen in Phoenix. It is now the car-jacking capital of the world. Most were SUV’s and pickup trucks. At a conservative average of $15,000.00 per vehicle, owner losses exceeded $864 million. Insurance companies in the state suffered incredible claims from policyholders.

Arizona is the temporary home of 500,000 illegal aliens. They cost Arizona taxpayers over $1 billion annually in services for schools, medical care, welfare anchor babies, loss of tax base and prisons. Illegals use those vehicles for smuggling more people and drugs from around the world into our country. When the vehicles are recovered, they are smashed-up wrecks in the desert. If not found, they have new owners south of the border as thieves drive the cars through the desert and into Mexico as easily as you drive your kids to soccer practice.

Illegal aliens displaced American workers at a cost in excess of $133 billion dollars last year according to Harvard Professor George Borjas. American citizens: College and high school kids cannot find a summer job in yard care, landscape, fast food or service jobs. Why? Illegal aliens work them at a third the wage and often, under the table.” (a whole lot more found at this link)

  1. Brian Says:

I think we as Black Americans are being ignorant and racist on this subject when we and our Southern counterparts are linked through blood and cultural existences. For us to join in the cry for these people to not be allowed a freedom to provide for their families in one of the richest countries in the world is crazy. WE SHOULD BE THINKING MORE FORWARDLY IN THAT THE MINORITY VOTE WILL BECOME ALL THAT MUCH MORE IMPORTANT WITH THE HELP OF OUR MEXICAN COMRADES WHO ARE ALSO LOOKED DOWN UPON BY WHITES, WE NEED TO SPREAD THE WORD AMONGST THOSE OF THEM THAT ARE OUR FRIENDS (AND LEGAL FOR THAT MATTER) THAT OUR VOTES NEED TO BE MOBILIZED AND WE CAN ELECT ONLY THE CANDIDATES WHO ARE GOING TO MAKE SURE THAT OUR NEEDS ARE BEING MET. WE SOUND LIKE RACIST IDIOTS WHEN WE SAY THEY ARE GOING TO TAKE OUR JOBS LIKE AMERICA WILL EVER STOP PRODUCING JOBS. WE HAVE TO BE SMARTER BECAUSE THEY ARE OUR CLOSEST COUSINS IN THE RACIAL DIVIDE (EVEN IMITATING THE PYRAMIDS WE BUILT IN EGYPT). I SAY SPREAD THE WORD TO YOUR MEXICAN FRIENDS AND LETS CREATE ALLIANCES AMONGST BLACK AND BROWN ALIKE IN ORDER TO MAKE SURE GOVERNMENT IS SERVING US.

Also if you lived here for 16 years, raising a family signed for your papers and because immigration is so slow you may have to wait another 6 or 7 years in order to be “legal” would you want to be kicked out of the country because a few whiny folks can’t stand competition. NO, so stop the madness black folks and lets mobilize our votes and even our spending dollars within our communities (my hood is mixed with blacks and mexicans) and give racist white america (emphasis on RACIST) the middle finger.

  2. Saudia Says:

    1. Illegals don’t vote

    2. JOBS, JOBS, JOBS

    3. If I commit a crime should they not arrest me because I got away with and started a family.

  3. Dolphin Says:

It looks as if there will be over a million marching today (or, if NOI was counting, 6 million).

They have been instructed to wear white shirts and carry American flags. If we get any lesson out of this, it is that they certainly know how to organize.

Legalize the 14 million illegals? I still haven’t heard a good reason to do so….although it will give Brian 28 million middle fingers to work with.

How long before another 14 million sneak in. Step one – control the borders of this country.

  4. exe Says:

Have you ever noticed that non-whites are divided into every possible subgroup, but that whites consider all caucasian-types, from Iceland down to Argentina as white and part of the one group?

Brian is right about building alliances. There will be NO WAY to stop the latinization of the USA. Initiating a process that builds bridges between African Americans and Latinos is the only intelligent position.

  5. Dolphin Says:

You CA guys can attest to the way Black-Mexican alliances work on the Left Coast. Crips and Bloods vs MS-13 in the prisons, separate but equal ghettos and the like.

These problems are nation-wide. An amnesty program will in no way help the American Black man.

  6. Duane Says:

For starters, I align myself with the HUMAN race–not just Black or Brown–Humans that abide by the law.

What I find amazing here is that while some of you (my dear readers :) )are somewhat neutral on this issue, I wonder if you are just as neutral on sovereignty issues in African countries or whatever your country of origin.

If folks from south of the border want to be intertwined in the American fabric, then do so LEGALLY like everyone else. Out here in Cali, the prison population is overrun with illegals–basically my tax dollars are paying to baby sit them–something that Mexico should be doing. Most of our public schools are crap because many of children of illegals cannot speak English. So guess what happens to lil’ Tyrone or Tonya who do study and work hard? Their pace of study is oftentimes squashed because oftentimes they have to stay in close step with those who cannot speak English. Or what about proposals that push for FREE college education for the children of illegals? Try preaching that gospel to the average college kid who has to work 1-2 jobs just to stay in school.

The only “bridge” that I want to build is one that takes those who entered this country illegally back to their country of origin.

But seriously, with 11+ million illegals in this country, there is no way they are going to be kicked out or voluntarily leave. My suggestion? Cut off ALL social services to this group. Modify the law that says if a child is born in this country, both the child (and mother I think) can become citizens. Just these two things will contribute to a sharp decline of those who are in this country illegally.

So once they stop infringing on the rights and privileges of ALL American citizens paid for by us, then I can align myself with them. Until then, adios amigos!

I wonder if these protesters were just as outspoken about those racist stamps from Mexico that surfaced here in the US months ago…

And I am to align myself with this hypocrisy?

  7. Dolphin Says:

This is the link that Duane references in his second update

    http://www.thetruthseeker.co.uk/print.asp?ID=4345

If you haven’t checked it out, you may want to. It is chock full of statistics on what these Illegals are costing us.

  8. exe Says:

Duane, I completely agree with you on the cutting off of social services. I also think that services should not be provided in Spanish. People who answer telephones in government offices should be able to understand and speak english ( often not the case in California). Also, no free university unless it is free for all, and prisoners should be sent home immediately… Still, it is better to find ways to avoid the development of hatred between two minority groups, each of whom are hated by the majority group.

Also the activities and “beefs” between groups of people in prison should not have an impact on relations between entire races of people that are not in prison..

Finally, please tell the whole story of the stamps;… beloved cartoon personality from Mexico’s past, much like Aunt Jemimah…etc.

  9. Brian Says:

Duane just because you align yourself with the Human race doesn’t change your race you are a black man thats the reality. I just don’t think this whole situation even in light of the inborn terrorists(gangs) will be that bad for us in the long run. We still have to get up get out and get ours and we still will be paying taxes (which is an issue I care very little about). Doesn’t immigratin have to be sped up a bit to help those who are in desperate situations (not like we aren’t) ? Yes the process should be respected by the illegals but I don’t see how or why blacks who aren’t genocidal should have a problem. I need more input more input please. And there still seems to an innate fear on our behalf of this situation because we will lose our place as the “pitied negro”. I say get over it because the situation is not going to just up and go away that easily and I am all for the process of legalization. It just seems so racist on our behalf to complain the way we do when we still have to handle our business regardless of who comes in or out of this country. Minorities will grow to be majorities is what I see Duane.

  10. Brian Says:

AND LOUDLY I COULD CARE A LESS ABOUT WHAT BACKWARDS, RACIST, IGNORANT PEOPLE DO WITH STAMPS ARE WHATEVER. IT BEGS THE QUESTION DO THEY DEFINE OUE EXISTENCE OR DO WE ?

  11. Brian Says:

And also I spoke about the aligning of the black and brown races because we are the ones complaining that our needs are not being met so an alliance, I feel is the next best thing besides legally entering into the country.

  12. Duane Says:

Duane just because you align yourself with the Human race doesn’t change your race you are a black man thats the reality.

Huh? Who said anything about changing my race?

    Let’s pull out the ol’dictionary…

Racist-Discrimination or prejudice based on race.

This whole thing is about those who break the law..PERIOD. In this particular issue many of those lawbreakers come from south of the border. You also have Chinese, South Asians, Middle Easterns, Africans, etc. that do the same thing (Just take a long stroll through LA to see it in action–NY too!)

Finally, please tell the whole story of the stamps;… beloved cartoon personality from Mexico’s past, much like Aunt Jemimah…etc.

I think I already covered the whole story on this site a while ago. Do a search to find the post(s).

As far as the “racism” element goes, it is those who are for unchecked illegal immigration that keep injecting race into this whole issue. Most Americans respect their desire for a better life, but are offended at their sense of entitlement that America should provide the all the “milk” needed for their livelihood. The truth here is that Vicente Fox is simply exporting his poor to the US and then wants to use the race/class card to get us to go along with it.

As I mentioned earlier, Mexico defended those racist cartoons that depict blacks in stereotypical imagery. NOW all of a sudden they want to compare their plight to ours–puhleeze! I didn’t see any marches from them on that one.

  13. Dolphin Says:

According to the CIA Handbook on Mexico, they have a population of 106M. The 14M here represent over 13%. Do any of the supporters of legalizing these undocumented people feel that there won’t be another 14M right behind them?

The US is not a dumping ground for the world’s poor, or else we would have ships landing every day from the poor countries of the world.

We are the most integrated country in the world. That’s what makes us great. We do however have out limits.

  14. Brian Says:

While we are debating issues that are non-issues. ANOTHER RAPPER, PROOF OF D-12, WAS GUNNED DOWN IN A CLUB ALONG WITH ANOTHER PERSON. I THINK THAT NOT ENOUGH IS SAID OR DONE TO COMBAT NOT ONLY BLACK ON BLACK CRIME BUT MURDER OF A HUMAN BEING PERIOD. WE ARE AT A POINT WHERE SELF RULERSHIP IS EVER THE MORE IMPORTANT AND A LOT OF US DONT EVEN RECOGNIZE THIS FACT AND ARE CONSISTENTLY TRAPPING OURSELVES. I KNOW HIP HOP WILL BEAR THE BRUNT OF THE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS ONE BUT WE HAVE TO HONE IN ON THE FACT THAT THE VIOLENT SIDE OF HIP HOP WAS NEVER INTENDED AND THAT IT IS MEANT TO BE A VESSEL OF PEACE AND UNITY (TEMPLE OF HIP HOP. ORG). BUT I JUST WANT TO SAY SENSELESS MURDERS BRING LIGHT TO HOW INSIGNIFICANT THINGS LIKE IMMIGRATION REFORM REALLY ARE EVEN WITH ITS PITFALLS. THESE PEOPLE DONT HAVE A SENSE OF ENTITLEMENT BUT MORESO ARE LOOKING TO BETTER THEMSELVES AND THEY ARE NOT BEGGING FOR HANDOUTS THEY WORK FOR EVERY PENNY THEY GET. BUT ASIDE FROM THAT I WANT TO POST R.I.P. PROOF I FOR ONE WILL MISS YOUR WITTY COMEDIC THUG STYLE OF RAPPING AND MY CONDOLENCES GO OUT TO THE D-12 FAMILY AND HIS PERSONAL FAMILY
