Recently, I had a desire for sorbet so I went to the store to buy a small container just for me. I quickly noticed that the brand that I usually get came in a sugar free version. As usual I read the label and did not find anything out of the ordinary–but wait…Splenda? I’ve heard of it and seen it on the sugar aisle, but never used it personally. I thought about it for a little while and decided to go for it. Something inside was already telling me that this was a bad move.

After tasting a few scoops, I noticed the unpleasant aftertaste. Wanting to know more about spenda, I went to my computer and googled for it. The excerpt below is just one of the links I found interesting:

The chemical sucralose, marketed as “Splenda”, has replaced aspartame as the #1 artificial sweetener in foods and beverages. Why not use Splenda? Well, research in animals has shown that sucralose can cause many problems such as:

* Shrunken thymus glands (up to 40% shrinkage)

* Enlarged liver and kidneys

* Atrophy of lymph follicles in the spleen and thymus

* Increased cecal weight

* Reduced growth rate

* Decreased red blood cell count

* Hyperplasia of the pelvis

* Extension of the pregnancy period

* Aborted pregnancy

* Decreased fetal body weights and placental weights

* Diarrhea

    I had an Arnold Palmer Half & Half (I know, I know) with Splenda in it a couple months ago. NEVER AGAIN. I felt like I had a stomach ulcer afterwards so bad doing anything (laying down, standing up or sitting) was painful. No more Splenda for me…

    Uh-oh. My wife and daughter covet that stuff. They stick it in their purses whenever we go out to restaurants that serve it. Thanks for the heads-up.

    Yeah, please stay away from this stuff. I have done a lot of reading on alternative sweetners (non natural) and I have found none that are safe in the long term.

    But don’t just take my word for it.

    I just placed a call to Whole Foods and they told me that Stevia (a natural herb) is the way to go. It comes in little packets like other sweetners.

    I tried stevia and it left a nasty after taste in my mouth. It was not good,but I use natural turbano sugar. It is less processed than the granulated sugar. Sugar really isn’t that bad for you if you consume it in moderation.

    Don’t but he hype about the effect on rats.

    The sucralose dosages which caused the thymus gland effects referenced in the NICNAS report was 3000 mg/kg bw/day for 28 days. For an 80 kg (176 lb) human, this would mean a 28-day intake of 240 grams of sucralose, which is equivalent to more than 20,000 individual Splenda packets/day for approximately one month.

    So, unless your taking in 20,000 packets a day, you’ll be fine. :)

    Well I must admit, Splenda is the Holy Grail for me. I am an avid coffee consumer and Splenda tastes amazing to me. I am completely addicted. And for sure it tastes 20 times better than the other marketed artificial sweeteners.

    problem is that you can not cook or bake with stevia and it has an aftertaste. I’ve used Splenda for over 10 years and there’s no sideeffects. I’d be interested what the bias is of the supposed research that has been cited.
